Former First Guaranty general counsel Michael McElroy joins Mayer Brown

McElroy will be based at firm’s Washington D.C. office

On Friday, Mayer Brown announced it has named finance attorney Michael McElroy as a partner resident in its Washington, D.C. office.

McElroy will focus his practice on a range of matters related to the mortgage banking and consumer finance industries.

“Mike’s broad experience serving in a variety of senior positions at leading mortgage companies and in the private sector is impressive,” said Paul Jorissen, a co-leader of Mayer Brown’s global Banking & Finance practice.

“He offers our firm and clients a very powerful combination of skills. Mayer Brown is uniquely positioned as the only firm that has both significant structured finance transactional and consumer regulatory capabilities, which are in high demand by our clients,” Jorissen added.

McElroy has more than 20 years of leadership experience in the financial services industry and has previously held senior roles with mortgage firms, government-sponsored enterprises and private law firms. He previously served as the general counsel and secretary for mortgage lender First Guaranty Mortgage. Previously, he served as general counsel, chief compliance officer and secretary for Stonegate Mortgage.

“Mayer Brown has the best-in-class platform for financial services and Fintech across all disciplines, which made my move an easy choice,” said McElroy. “Working closely with my new consumer regulatory, structured finance and corporate colleagues, I look forward to using my experience as general counsel to help the firm remain a one-stop shop for clients.”

McElroy has represented clients all across the finance spectrum, including structured finance transactions, IPOs, corporate governance and board advisory matters, regulatory actions. He’s also represented clients regarding private equity investments, mergers & acquisitions, technology and other outsourcing transactions, as well as warehouse and mortgage servicing financings.
