Attorneys General sue Tampa firm over mortgages

Florida and Connecticut file lawsuit

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and Connecticut Attorney General George Jepson filed a federal lawsuit against Tampa-based Berger Law Group, alleging it collected at least $4.7 million in illegal upfront fees from distressed homeowners, according to an article in the Tampa Bay Business Journal

According to the suit, Berger Law Group, based in Tampa, and another company, Resolution Law Group, made false promises to consumers, saying they could get help them obtain mortgage modifications, but provided little or no actual assistance to the homeowners.

The article explained that consumers were told they could pay to be included as plaintiffs in so-called "mass joinder lawsuits" against their mortgage lenders or servicers.
