U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder to step down

Departs after nearly six years

U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder will announce on Thursday he is stepping down after a term marked by advances in civil rights and frequent battles with Republicans in Congress. Per Reuters:

The article noted that Holder will remain in office until a successor is nominated and confirmed.

Holder's departure after nearly six years sets up a potentially tense confirmation battle with Republicans in a lame-duck U.S.

A White House official said Obama has not made a decision on a replacement and will not name a successor on Thursday. Names floated for the job include Manhattan U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara, Solicitor General Don Verrilli, former Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli, California Attorney General Kamala Harris, Brooklyn U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch and Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.
