Home Depot’s Veterans Day project reflects housing’s commitment to service members

Happy Veterans Day!

It’s interesting that this year Veterans Day fell in the same week as Election Day.

Election Day is always the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November, while Veterans Days is annually honored on Nov. 11.

While coverage on President-elect Donald Trump is dominating the news, the nation is also taking the time to truly honor veterans for their service.

We thank you.

Here is just one example of the countless ways the housing finance industry works to support veterans.

An article in Fast Company spotlighted the Home Depot Foundation for its work to help rebuild and repair 26,000 homes since 2011.

While the article’s focus is to list ways to help support and honor veterans, it also shares a story that echoes many of the reasons people in the housing industry work to serve the military.

From the piece:

When Anthony Cruse returned home to West Tampa after serving in Vietnam, he was diagnosed with schizophrenia. The 100-year-old blue bungalow that had been passed down to him from his father and grandfather, who both served in the military, fell into disrepair over the next few decades—until this year a local nonprofit, Rebuilding Together Tampa Bay, enlisted a team of contractors and volunteers to revitalize the historic home. That effort was in partnership with the Home Depot Foundation.

In special honor of Veterans Days, Home Depot created Celebration of Service, a months-long project which worked with local and national nonprofits to complete projects for aging, combat-wounded and homeless veterans.

There’s still one day to get involved, and here’s how you can do that according to the organization’s website.

During the campaign, Team Depot is inviting consumers to celebrate service on social media using the #ServiceSelfie hashtag.

For each #ServiceSelfie shared during Celebration of Service, The Home Depot Foundation will donate $1 up to $500,000 to organizations that help senior veterans and veterans with service-connected disabilities including: Meals on Wheels America, Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Volunteers of America, Student Veterans of America and Team Rubicon.
