Housing industry remembers Sen. John McCain

Loss mourned by both sides of political spectrum

Over the weekend, Sen. John McCain passed away at the age of 81 of brain cancer. Now, members of the housing and mortgage finance industries are paying tribute to the renowned Republican politician, expressing their support in remembrance of the war hero-turned U.S. senator from Arizona.

McCain spent a lifetime serving his country, a former naval officer and prisoner of war in Vietnam. He later returned to serve as a Republican senator for Arizona and was known for speaking his mind –even voting against his party when his conscience urged him.

But regardless of one’s political views, McCain was an American war hero. He was revered by politicians on both sides of the aisle and his absence will be felt.

On Monday, McCain’s former presidential campaign manager Rick Davis read the senator’s final farewell statement to America. In it, he cautioned against turning against one another in the name of “patriotism.”

From the address:

We weaken our greatness when we confuse our patriotism with tribal rivalries that have sown resentment and hatred and violence in all the corners of the globe. We weaken it when we hide behind walls, rather than tear them down, when we doubt the power of our ideals, rather than trust them to be the great force for change they have always been.

We are three-hundred-and-twenty-five million opinionated, vociferous individuals. We argue and compete and sometimes even vilify each other in our raucous public debates. But we have always had so much more in common with each other than in disagreement. If only we remember that and give each other the benefit of the presumption that we all love our country we will get through these challenging times. We will come through them stronger than before. We always do.

McCain also expressed that he loved the life he had and would not have traded one day of it.

From the address:

I have often observed that I am the luckiest person on earth. I feel that way even now as I prepare for the end of my life. I have loved my life, all of it. I have had experiences, adventures and friendships enough for ten satisfying lives, and I am so thankful. Like most people, I have regrets. But I would not trade a day of my life, in good or bad times, for the best day of anyone else’s.

And now, members of the housing industry are expressing their support in remembrance of the war hero-turned U.S. senator.

Here are a few of the tweets the industry put out in remembrance:

What an eloquent, articulate, passionate farewell statement from Senator McCain. Whether or not you agreed with his politics, it's hard to disagree with the sentiments he expresses here. May God bless his soul, and his family. https://t.co/0aMeeUXweF

Thanks to @SecretService for showing the respect deserved. Well timed…our good friend Bob Byers guarded many presidents with pride, loyalty, and selflessness…..even when not all our president had earned that right. This is a great post. https://t.co/9ZrU2DhcAV

Fellow senators on both sides of the aisle also mourned his passing:

I count it as a blessing to have had the honor to serve with John McCain in the Senate and on the Armed Services Committee. If there ever was a true American patriot, John was that patriot. I’ll miss his strength and his maverick spirit, but most of all I’ll miss his kindness. pic.twitter.com/UzYvlRN1No

Senator John McCain was a patriot, and an extraordinary American war hero. Heidi and I send our heartfelt thoughts and prayers to Cindy, and to the entire McCain family, as they grieve the loss of a loving husband, father, and grandfather. May he Rest In Peace. pic.twitter.com/PkOCPFVdf7
