BSI Financial Services founder and CEO Gagan Sharma, a visionary leader in the mortgage industry, has transformed his company from a small player in the mortgage servicing arena with nine employees to a dominant force managing billions of dollars in assets and with over 550 employees. Today, Sharma is fulfilling his vision to foster sustainable homeownership through innovative solutions that are helping mortgage servicers lower costs, reduce errors and deliver phenomenal borrower experiences.
Sharma’s unique approach and commitment to technology have revolutionized mortgage servicing practices and ultimately improved the mortgage experience for homebuyers. In 2006, Sharma led an investment group to acquire BSI from its former parent bank with an eye on modernizing a mortgage servicing industry that was in dire need of fresh ideas. Sharma re-invented BSI from a small lender into a nationwide mortgage servicing provider. He launched multiple new product lines and has supported them through acquisitions, a strong management team, and a companywide culture of innovation. Among his groundbreaking creations was ASSET360, a life-of-loan mortgage servicing analytics technology that automatically scours BSI’s entire portfolio for over 500 exceptions and routes exception reports to operations, administration and onboarding teams for resolution.
Sharma also spearheaded the creation of Bizzy Labs, which develops technology-based alternatives to manual processes for managing compliance risk in mortgage servicing. He created Bizzy Labs’ data-driven regtech technology, Libretto, which helps lenders, servicers and investors improve loan portfolio quality by identifying data anomalies and enabling their timely research and remediation.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
I’ve been an entrepreneur for 25 years, so I will share two pieces of entrepreneurial advice that largely have the same meaning. The first is “The profit and loss statement is for your ego. It’s the cash flow statement that really matters.” The second piece of advice I received is a bit more prosaic: “Always focus on cash and liquidity.” As an entrepreneur, people often think about the profit and loss statement and how much you may say your company showed in profits. But ultimately what matters is how much cash is in the door.
